Rome: to the happiness of the senses and the mind
Rome, the eternal city
Rome is perhaps the original "open air museum". Once you've got your plane ticket to Rome, prepare to see history come to life through the city's grandiose architecture. Explore the Coliseum in the heart of the city, its ancient stones dating back almost 2,000 years. Imagine the many gladiatorial combats that would have taken place in this superbly conserved Roman amphitheatre - it's the largest in the world. A stone's throw from the Capitoline Hill the numerous vestiges of the Roman Forum bear witness to the importance of this city, an unparalleled centre of power in the first two centuries AD.
Rome, the contemporary city
However, the Italian capital is not content to contemplate its rich past: ancient monuments are enveloped naturally by the city's urban fabric and brought to life by the contemporary dynamism of the city. Thanks to our Rome travel offers, you can experience la dolce vita in the gloriously bohemian district of Trastevere. In its winding streets and lively squares rues you'll be seduced by the aromas of local specialities: stuffed artichokes, offal dishes and divine pasta of all kinds. Treat yourself to some ciambelle al vino, crunchy biscuits dunked in wine, as you admire the intoxicating view from Janiculum hill.
Rome, the spiritual city
As well as being an epicurean capital, Rome nourishes hungers of the spiritual kind. Booking flights to Rome means stepping into the epicentre of Christian life. At the Vatican, stop in the centre of St Paul's Square and allow the immensity of the space sink in: it's 320m long and 240m wide, and can accommodate up to 300,000 people. St Paul's Basilica overlooks this impressive site, its dome towering 45m above the square. If you've fallen under Rome's spell, don't forget to throw a coin into the Trevi Fountain to ensure your speedy return to the city, thanks to a great Rome flight deal, of course.

Although Rome was not built in a day, it's beginnings can be traced back a very long way! The founding of the eternal city took place on 21st April of the year 753 BC, when the twins Romulus and Remus decided to begin building a city, at the foot of the Palatine hill. To commemorate the event, the inhabitants of Rome take to the streets, attending historical re-enactments in famous places around the city, such as the Colosseum or the Capitol. By night, the Aventine hill is covered with candles: it's a magical sight.

The Vatican has been an autonomous state since 1929. It is situated on the spot where St Peter was martyred.
The first Christian emperor, Constantine, built a basilica in the 4th century BC which was destroyed, then later rebuilt.

In the 15th century, the basilica was falling down when Bramante, Michelangelo and Maderno designed a new church. It was to be the largest in the world.
The basilica houses a vast and impressive architectural space inside. Michelangelo's dome stands 136 m tall by 42 m wide.

Inside the church you can see the famous statue of the Pietà by Michelangelo, the sculpted bronze canopy by Bernini above the altar and the bronze statue of St Peter by Arnolfo di Cambio.
St Peter's Square with its curved colonnades designed by Bernini can accommodate up to 300,000 people for ceremonies and papal blessings.

It was the Emperor Vespasian who was responsible for building the Flavian Amphitheatre, or Colosseum (or sometimes Coliseum), as it's more commonly known. It is one of the greatest architectural works of Roman times, and was built on the site of Nero's artificial lake between 72 and 80 AD. The largest Roman amphitheatre in the world, it could accommodate 60,000 spectators.

This arena hosted gladiator fights, vast staged battles, and spectacles involving wild animals and criminals.

In the Middle Ages, the Colosseum was transformed into a fortress, before being used as a quarry.

Visitors to the monument will marvel at the feats of architectural engineering, while also wondering at the cruelty and violence of the Romans' circus games.

In ancient Rome, the Roman Forum was a focal point for the city's political, religious and commercial life. It was built between two hills, the Palatine and the Capitoline, on a swamp drained by a sewer system designed by Tarquin the Elder, in the 7th century BC.

On the forum, there were shops, markets, basilicas, the Curia, or seat of the Senate, the Regia where priests and pontiffs met and numerous temples.

The main artery was the Via Sacra which was used for religious processions and political parades.

The forum was progressively abandoned from the 7th century onwards, and the ruins were buried before being rediscovered many centuries later. Among these remains are some of the best preserved antique buildings in the world.
