Its peaceful dream beaches and crystal clear waters are a reminder of those of the Pacific. Ancient kingdom, the Katsuren, Nakagusuku and Zakimi castles, which are inscribed on UNESCO's World Heritage List, are the perfect witnesses to Ryuku's history. And even today, the kingdom's culture comes to life in the streets of Okinawa. Okinawa, Japan in the tropics
Okinawa: a little closer to paradise
Welcome to the "Japanese Hawaii". Book your flights to Okinawa, and fly to an archipelago with a subtropical climate, where the lush landscapes set it apart from the rest of the country. Picture perfect beaches and glorious jungle abound: Okinawa has preserved its wonderful natural heritage. Humpback whales come to show off to the visitors in waters off the Kerama Islands Natural Park. Those who love diving will adore the turquoise waters of Ishigaki island, where you can see manta rays and multi-coloured coral. Don't miss the chance to explore Yambaru Park, seeking out the vertiginous Hiji waterfalls.
Okinawa: secret to eternal youth
Tropical currents warm the islands and exert their own influence: the archipelago has preserved various unusual characteristics for which it is famous throughout Japan. Thanks to your promotional plane ticket to Okinawa you can visit the Makishi market and discover the unique local gastronomic speciality, which is said to contribute to the record number of 100-year-olds in the local region. It's called goya champuru, and it's a stir fry made with bitter melon, accompanied by some kuro koji (mushroom alcohol). Next, stop by the Tsuboya pottery museum to admire the emblematic crafts of the region. The museum houses a kiln that is several centuries old.
Okinawa: where history lives on
Therein lies the secret of the region's charm: Okinawa is frozen in time with few concessions to modernity. Your round trip flight to Okinawa brings you to a land where historic eras seem to live on. On Taketomi island, the sandy streets are edged with small stone walls, buffalo pull carts full of visitors, and shisas (guardian lion dog statuettes) guard people's homes. The symbolic Shuri castle has been rebuilt in an identical manner numerous times since the 14th century and today bears witness to seven centuries of wars and dynasties. The archipelago, with its 160 islands, is one of Japan's hidden gems that will be revealed to you thanks to your Okinawa flight booking.

Okinawa is a small Japanese island in the archipelago. However, it houses the second largest aquarium in the world (after the one in Atlanta, USA). Built on the site of the Universal Exposition of 1975, the aquarium was opened to the public in 2002. Churaumi means "beautiful sea", and indeed it's more than just an aquarium. It's the only place in the world you can see whale sharks in a tank, or rather a gigantic pool measuring 7,500 m². The vast size of these artificial habitats means that even coral grows there. Dive right into this fascinating experience at Churaumi Aquarium.
Manzamo literally means "a field for 10,000 people to sit" and although you're unlikely to see as many people as that, Cape Manzamo has become a must see for visitors to Okinawa. Amazing rock formations, beautifully clear deep turquoise waters, this is a truly delightful stretch of coastline. Enjoy a stroll along this jagged coastline or go for a dip in the glorious sea. According to historians, Shuri Castle was built in the 14th century, on the island of Okinawa, not far from the island's main town, Naha. The castle was the nerve centre of the Kingdom of Ryuku, as evidenced by the calligraphy that can be admired in the throne room. It served as a military base during the Second World War. Every morning at 8:30 there is an opening ceremony of the Hôshinmon gate to the sound of traditional music played by musicians in period costume. The castle has been a Unesco-listed site since 2000.
The city of Okinawa is famous for being the birthplace of karate. As its name suggests, Dojo Bar pays tribute to this Japanese martial art. You can enjoy sake, beers and Japanese wines at this bar, among images of the great karate masters, their swords hanging from the wall. The atmosphere is friendly and fun, but if you were to eat your neighbour's gyoza by mistake, you may end up getting a karate chop more than you bargained for.
